What if the very connectedness that binds us together became the source of our destruction?  Steven Soderberg’s “Contagion” forces us to experience such a deadly bind.  One easily transmittable virus let loose (and caused?) by a multinational culture that jets across continents, infecting anyone/everyone exposed to the most casual of contact…..death via foaming convulsions occurring rapidly and without recourse……Soderberg has delivered a very smart film, steeped in the science it attempts to engage to move the story along…He has engaged a stellar cast (Matt Damon, Gywneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Coittard, Kate Winslett and Jude Law) to send us on the mission to stop the proliferating virus before it stops us…Soderberg credits(and expects) the audience to engage with the scientific drama and fly along for the ride without  dummying drama or “cheats” to tie up conflict or fan the flames of drama….the film works on many levels and those of us who are science geeks  enjoy the sheer screen space given to visual explanations of the interconnectedness of host/viral DNA…..still, the human stories are poignant…..and dare I say contagious?????  A definite “Must See Movie”…before it is tooooo late????   Jolyn Wagner

What a great summary of a powerful film! Myself, I could have used a little more dramatic tension along with the science, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Go see it!

  2. Jolyn Welsh Wagner says:

Maybe more tension may have evolved by milking the drama more directly…I did think though that the distanced approach created a kind of tension that built because there were few “easy” releases for it…we were stuck with the journey as it evolved…and the detached (perhaps with the exception of Matt Damon’s quiet “everyman” approach to the catastrophes destroying his life) tone of the scientific race to the (possible?) rescue…what do you think?
