The Story of Film: An Odyssey is a 15 hour immersion in the world of movies–from the Big Bang to the present, this wonderful documentary by director, film critic Mark Cousins provides an essential experience for any cinephile.  Those of us not fortunate enough to do movies for a living wait for opportunities like this one, where those truly love film make great efforts to explain and share their passion.

The Detroit Film Theatre is hosting the episodes in two hour blocks.  If you’ve just tuned in, you missed Episodes 1-2 (The Birth of Movies and the Silent Era) and 3-4 (The 1920’s Golden Age of World Cinema and the 1930’s Sound Explosion).  Cousins narrates his story with an inviting brogue and a pure love of movies.  The series took 6 years to complete and spans 11 decades with over 1000 film clips and 15 interviews (including archival footage with Keaton, Dreyer, Lang, Ozu, Ray, Welles, Ford, Hawkes…..need I say more????)

This week’s entrees screen on Saturday, October 13 at 3pm.  Episodes 5 and 6 pick up post World War II and will be followed by:

Episodes 7-8  on Saturday, October 27

Episodes 9-10 on Saturday, November 3

Episodes 11-12 on Saturday, November 10

Episodes 13-15 on Saturday, November 17

Last Saturday’s screening episodes 3-4 emphasized the  story of the rebels and highlighted those who chose early on to challenge the monolithic Hollywood studio style of filmmaking. He then took us on a whirlwind ride through the sound explosion, demonstrating why movies were changed forever.  Cousins weaves his informative essay narration through a mesmerizing array of film clips, organized with love and expertise.  There’s a feeling of being spoonfed in a manner that is satisfying but challenging–the choices are engaging and range from the iconic to the obscure–each treated with equal respect.

IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST TWO EPISODES DON’T DESPAIR!   EPISODES 5-6 AND SUBSEQUENT INSTALLMENTS ARE WAITING FOR YOU!  AND, AS IF THIS ISN’T ENOUGH, THE WHOLE SERIES IS FREE OF CHARGE IF YOU ARE A DIA MEMBER!!!!!!!   WHAT A REMARKABLE OPPORTUNITY TO FEEL THE STORY OF FILM.

SEE YOU AT 3 PM ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13
