Searching for Sugar Man

Some stories are stranger than fiction.

Searching for Sugar Man is the story of Sixto Rodriguez, an enigmatic musician from DETROIT who became (unbeknownst to anyone) an iconic figure in the fight against apartheid in South Africa.  j

If you have not already seen the documentary which has righteously been nominated for this year’s “Best” Documentary film, now is the time.  The film (poignantly directed by Malik Bendjelloul) is still screen at local cinemas and was just (wisely) added to Comcast On Demand.
Rodriguez was an innovative 1970’s musician/songwriter whose initial albums “Cold Fact” and “Coming from Reality” received some recogniton, but failed to achieve any recognition in the US.  Howvever, bootleg copies made their way to South Africa whre he became an enigmatic superstar.  Rodriquez, unaware of this, remained in Detroit, exploring political activism, but struggling in manual labor, traveling around small bars in the D, making music.

This is an incredibe story.  It is a wel-made documentary which weaves the essence of Rodriguez’s music with historical footage and spot on inteviews. I am avoiding enthusiam which will inadvertantly produce spoilers.

This is a marvelous movie.  An absolute Must See Movie.

Don’t miss it and be there to applaud its Oscar next Sunday

I have been praising “Searching for Sugarman” to everyone I can. It is an unbelievable story that almost seems like a fairy tale…Detroits own Cinderella! The humbleness and pride that exude from the character Rodriquez is heart warming. what his music did for others is amazing.

  3. Great post! I agree completely. I already ordered his CDs. You are tight thay there is something magical about the whole story
