Practice Gap: Divorce has profound impacts on children who feel as though the world they have known is gone and that they are alienated, lonely, and forgotten. The psychological effects are long lasting. Clinicians may be unaware of the trauma experienced since children often cannot articulate their anxieties and fantasies. This presentation will utilize the film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to illustrate some of the effects of divorce on children. Longings for understanding, for a relief from loneliness, and for repair and return to an earlier state will be noted.

Upon completion of this activity:
1) Participants will be able to list some of the psychological effects of divorce on children including their feelings of loss of trust of adults, alienation, and loneliness.
2) Participants will be able to identify some of the psychological tools children use to weather the traumatic effects of divorce. The will be able to identify strengths as well as areas of vulnerability.
3) Participants will be able to employ creative interventions to use when working imaginatively with children in psychotherapy.
